Bazi Four Pillars of Destiny
Discover your destiny through the ancient Chinese art of BaZi (八字). Calculate your Four Pillars, Five Element balance, Ten Gods, and Major Fate Cycles.
What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is one of the most profound systems in Chinese metaphysics. It translates literally to "Eight Characters" — the eight Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches that compose your birth year, month, day, and hour.
Unlike Western astrology which uses planetary positions, BaZi uses the Five Elements (Wu Xing), Yin-Yang polarity, and the 60 Jia Zi cycle to reveal your destiny blueprint. Each pillar contains layers of meaning: the visible stem, the hidden stems within the branch, the Nayin element, and the relationships between all these components.

📜 How Nayin Works
Each Nayin name is a poetic description of how two elements interact. For example, "Thunder Fire" (霹雳火) describes Fire within Wood — the explosive spark of lightning from a tree. 🔄 Five Element Cycles — Generating & Controlling in Depth
The Five Element cycles (五行生克) are the engine that drives all BaZi analysis. Every interaction in your chart — between stems, branches, hidden stems, and Da Yun — is governed by these two fundamental cycles.
🌱 Generating (相生)
Wood feeds Fire — growth fuels passion and expansion
Fire creates Earth — ash enriches soil, passion grounds into stability
Earth bears Metal — minerals form in rock, stability produces structure
Metal collects Water — condensation forms on metal, structure channels wisdom
Water nourishes Wood — rain feeds growth, wisdom enables expansion
⚔️ Controlling (相克)
Wood parts Earth — roots break soil, growth overcomes inertia
Earth dams Water — soil absorbs rain, stability contains wisdom
Water quenches Fire — rain extinguishes flame, wisdom tempers passion
Fire melts Metal — flame forges steel, passion transforms structure
Metal chops Wood — axe fells tree, structure disciplines growth
💡 Practical Application
In BaZi analysis, a strong Day Master needs to be drained (controlled or output) for balance, while a weak Day Master needs support (resource or companion). The generating cycle tells us what nourishes an element; the controlling cycle tells us what restrains it. When your chart has too much of one element, the remedy is found in these cycles — strengthen what controls the excess, or weaken what generates it.
🔄 Major Fate Cycles (大运) — How Destiny Unfolds
Da Yun (大运) represents the ten-year major cycles that govern different phases of your life. Each cycle brings a new pair of Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch that interacts with your natal chart, creating unique opportunities and challenges.
Childhood (Ages 1-15)
Governing: Year Pillar
The foundation years shaped by family, ancestry, and early environment. The Year Pillar's elements influence your basic character formation.
Youth (Ages 16-30)
Governing: Month Pillar
The period of education, career establishment, and young adulthood. The Month Pillar governs your career direction and early achievements.
Adulthood (Ages 31-45)
Governing: Day Pillar
The period of self-actualization, marriage, and core identity development. The Day Pillar represents your true self and spouse.
Maturity (Ages 46+)
Governing: Hour Pillar
The period of legacy, children, and spiritual development. The Hour Pillar shapes your later life achievements and inner peace.
📊 How Da Yun Works
Your Da Yun cycles are calculated from your Month Pillar. The direction of progression depends on your gender and whether your Day Master is Yin or Yang. Each 10-year cycle brings new elemental influences that activate different parts of your natal chart. When the Da Yun element supports your Day Master, you experience growth and opportunity. When it challenges your Day Master, you face obstacles that drive transformation and growth.
🧮 Direction Rule
Forward (顺行) for Yang-year males & Yin-year females. Backward (逆行) for Yin-year males & Yang-year females. The sequence follows the 60 Jiazi order from the Month Pillar.
📅 Starting Age
Calculated from days between birth and the next/previous solar term, divided by 3. This yields the age when the first decade cycle begins (typically ages 1–9).
🔍 Stem vs Branch
The Heavenly Stem governs the first 5 years (emphasis on external events); the Earthly Branch governs the second 5 years (emphasis on inner shifts). Both interact via the Ten Gods throughout.
📅 Annual Fortune (流年) — Year-by-Year Forecasting
Liu Nian (流年) represents the annual cycle — the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of each calendar year that interacts with your natal chart and current Da Yun. While Da Yun sets the decade's backdrop, Liu Nian paints each year's unique picture, bringing specific opportunities, challenges, and transformations.
🎯 Three-Layer Analysis Method
Accurate annual prediction requires considering three layers of influence simultaneously:
Layer 1: Natal Chart
Your birth chart shows static potential — what is possible. The Ten Gods, element balance, and chart pattern define inherent capabilities.
Layer 2: Current Da Yun
The decade cycle provides the environmental context — the "weather" of your life. It activates certain potentials and suppresses others.
Layer 3: Annual Liu Nian
The yearly cycle acts as the trigger — it activates specific events by clashing, harmonizing, or combining with branches in your chart and Da Yun.
Annual Stem (流年天干)
The Heavenly Stem of the current year represents the external events, opportunities, and challenges that manifest during that year. It interacts with your Day Master to create the year's dominant theme — whether it brings support (Resource), competition (Companion), expression (Output), wealth (Wealth), or authority (Officer).
Annual Branch (流年地支)
The Earthly Branch of the current year activates specific areas of your chart through its hidden stems and branch interactions. When the annual branch clashes with a natal branch, it signals transformation in that life area. When it harmonizes, it brings cooperation and support.
Clash Years (冲太岁)
When the annual branch directly opposes your Year branch (your zodiac sign), it is called 'clashing Tai Sui.' This is a year of major changes — relocations, career shifts, relationship upheavals. While challenging, clash years are catalysts for growth and often lead to positive breakthroughs.
Ben Ming Nian (本命年)
Every 12 years, the annual branch matches your Year branch (your zodiac year). Contrary to popular belief, this is not always negative — it amplifies your core nature and can bring great achievement if your chart is strong. It is a year for self-reflection and returning to your roots.
Nayin of the Year
The Nayin (纳音) of the annual pillar provides additional color. For example, a 'Gold in the Sea' year has different energy from a 'Fire of Thunder' year, even if both share the same stem-branch combination. The Nayin adds nuance to annual forecasting.
Interactions with Da Yun
The Liu Nian works within the context of your current Da Yun cycle. A favorable Liu Nian within a favorable Da Yun brings peak fortune. A challenging Liu Nian within a favorable Da Yun may bring temporary setbacks but overall growth. The interplay between these two cycles is key to accurate forecasting.
🔮 Reading Liu Nian with Your Chart
To read a Liu Nian, compare the annual pillar's Ten God relationship to your Day Master. This reveals the year's theme:
Resource Year
Learning, protection, spiritual growth
Companion Year
Self-strengthening, competition, partnerships
Output Year
Creativity, expression, career moves
Wealth Year
Financial gains, material pursuits, relationships
Officer Year
Authority, career, legal matters, discipline
⚡ How Annual Branches Trigger Events
Clash Year (冲太岁)
Major changes, upheaval, relocation, relationship shifts. The clashing area of life undergoes transformation.
Harmony Year (合太岁)
Favorable alliances, marriages, partnerships, and cooperative achievements in the harmonizing area.
Ben Ming Nian (本命年)
Your zodiac year — amplifies your core nature. A year for self-reflection and returning to roots, not necessarily negative.
Penalty Year (刑太岁)
Legal issues, health concerns, or interpersonal conflicts. The penalty type indicates the challenge nature.
