Norse Runes

The Elder Futhark โ€” 24 sacred symbols carved by the Norns into the World Tree. Draw upon this ancient Nordic wisdom tradition for guidance, insight, and cosmic connection.

Draw Your Rune

Focus your question to the cosmos, choose your spread, then draw. The runes that find you carry the message you need.

The Sacred Tradition of Runes

The runes are far more than an alphabet โ€” they are cosmic forces encoded in symbols. According to Norse mythology, Odin hung upon the World Tree Yggdrasil for nine days and nights, sacrificing himself to himself, pierced by his own spear, until the runes revealed themselves to him from the Well of Urd.

The Elder Futhark is the oldest runic alphabet, dating to the 2nd century CE. Its 24 characters are divided into three รฆttir (families) of eight runes each, governed by different cosmic forces.

Runes were carved into stone, wood, bone, and metal by seers and shamans across Northern Europe. They served as tools of divination, protection, healing, and magic. Each rune is not merely a symbol but a living force โ€” a doorway into a specific aspect of cosmic wisdom.

๐Ÿ’ก In Plain Words

Runes are wisdom symbols used by the ancient Norse people โ€” each rune represents a natural force or a life experience. Drawing a rune is like finding a mirror in ancient wisdom, helping you see your current situation and possible ways forward. Runes are not prophecy but reminders โ€” drawing your attention to things you've overlooked, or giving you courage to face the challenges ahead.

The Three ร†ttir

The 24 runes are organized into three families of eight, each governed by a different cosmic force and representing a stage of the soul's journey.

Freyr's ร†ttโ€” Freyr โ€” God of fertility, prosperity, and fair weather

The first eight runes govern material and creative forces โ€” wealth, strength, protection, wisdom, journey, illumination, exchange, and joy. These are the runes of building and creating in the physical world.

Rune Magic & Meditation

Beyond divination, runes are living forces that can be invoked in magical practice and contemplative meditation.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Runic Magic

Carving Runes (Ristning)

The act of carving a rune is itself a magical act. Traditionally carved into wood, stone, bone, or metal, each stroke is made with intention. As you carve, chant the rune's name and visualize its energy flowing into the material.

Rune Galdr (Chanting)

Each rune has a sacred sound โ€” its galdr. Chanting a rune's name while visualizing its symbol creates a resonance that activates its energy. The ancient skalds used galdr to invoke divine power, heal the sick, and shape the weather.

Binding Runes (Bindrunes)

Multiple runes can be combined into a single symbol called a bindrune. This amplifies and directs their combined energy. For example, binding Fehu (wealth) with Wunjo (joy) creates a talisman for joyful prosperity.

Rune Talismans

Wear a rune as a pendant, ring, or carved token to carry its energy with you. Consecrate the talisman by tracing the rune three times while speaking your intention. Rededicate it each new moon.

๐Ÿง˜ Rune Meditation

Rune Visualization

Close your eyes and visualize the rune's symbol floating before you in golden light. Let it grow until you can step inside it. Once within, feel the rune's energy surrounding you.

Journey Meditation (Pathworking)

Use Eihwaz as your gateway โ€” the yew tree that connects worlds. Visualize yourself walking along Yggdrasil's roots, encountering the rune's deity or associated landscape.

Daily Rune Practice

Draw a single rune each morning. Carry its energy through the day. Notice where its themes appear in your life. Journal your observations each evening.

Rune Breath Work

Breathe in while visualizing the rune's energy entering through the crown of your head. Hold the breath, letting the energy circulate. Exhale while sending the energy down through your roots into the earth.

Reading the Runes โ€” A Guide

๐Ÿ“œ Before Your Reading

  • Clear your mind and focus on your question
  • Hold your rune set and breathe deeply
  • State your question aloud or write it down
  • Ask the runes for guidance, not fortune-telling

๐Ÿ” During Your Reading

  • Draw runes without looking (from a bag or face-down)
  • Upright = active energy; Reversed = blocked or internal
  • Read each rune individually, then as a narrative
  • Trust your intuition โ€” it speaks through the runes

๐Ÿ“ After Your Reading

  • Journal the runes drawn and your interpretation
  • Meditate on the primary rune for deeper insight
  • Return to your reading after a day for fresh perspective
  • Thank the runes and return them to their bag respectfully

โš ๏ธ Important Notes

  • Gebo (แšท) and Dagaz (แ›ž) are symmetrical โ€” they do not reverse
  • Reversed does not always mean negative โ€” it may mean internal
  • The same rune appearing repeatedly amplifies its message
  • A rune set should be yours alone โ€” don't let others handle it
