Ifá Divination

Ifá is one of the most sophisticated divination systems in human history. Originating among the Yoruba people of present-day Nigeria, Benin, and Togo, this sacred tradition spans over 3,000 years of continuous spiritual practice.

At its core, Ifá holds that all of creation is encoded in 256 sacred Odu — cosmic verses that contain the totality of human destiny, medicine, storytelling, and spiritual law. These Odu were brought into the world by Orunmila, the Orisha of wisdom and destiny, who learned them from the supreme creator, Olodumare.

Through the transatlantic slave trade, Ifá traveled to the Americas, where it took root and flourished in Cuba, Brazil, Trinidad, and beyond. In the New World, it merged with other African spiritual traditions and gave birth to Santería, Candomblé, and Vodou. Despite centuries of oppression, this sacred wisdom survived — a testament to the unbreakable spirit of those who carried it.

The divination process is conducted by a trained priest (a Babalawo, meaning "father of secrets") who uses sacred palm nuts or a divination chain (Opele) to reveal the Odu that speaks to the seeker's situation. Each Odu contains ese — sacred stories and prescriptions that guide the person toward alignment with their destiny.

In the Yoruba cosmology, the Orisha are divine emanations of the supreme creator, Olodumare. Each Orisha governs specific forces of nature and aspects of human experience. In Ifá divination, the Odu reveal which Orisha are most active in your life and what guidance they offer.
